When Your Child Needs a Little Extra Support
Watching your child grow brings many special moments, but it can also bring questions and challenges.
At certain stages, parents may feel unsure about how best to help, particularly when they notice changes in behaviour, emotional difficulties, or challenges that begin to affect their child or teenager’s everyday life.
There is no manual for knowing what to do in every situation. Sometimes, even after trying different approaches, it can be difficult to understand what may be behind a particular behaviour or to know how best to support your child.
At these times, seeking professional support can help.
Psychotherapy for children and adolescents provides a safe space to understand what is happening and helps children and teenagers develop the emotional resources they need to manage their feelings and the challenges they are facing.
The therapeutic process can also involve parents, helping families better understand their child’s needs and explore practical ways to support them in everyday life.
When can psychotherapy help?
Children and adolescents may benefit from psychological support for a range of difficulties and experiences, including:#
-
anxiety, excessive worry, fears and insecurities
-
difficulties managing emotions and frustration
-
irritability, anger and challenging behaviour
-
low self-esteem and lack of confidence
-
difficulties at school, socially or with friendships
-
bullying
-
difficulties related to ADHD and autism
-
obsessive and compulsive behaviours
-
sleep difficulties
-
parental separation and changes in family dynamics
-
loss and bereavement
-
significant changes, such as moving school, city or country
-
difficult or traumatic experiences
-
difficulties with relationships and communication
Every child and adolescent is unique. For this reason, the therapeutic process is tailored to each individual, taking into consideration their age, personal history, development and needs.
If your child or teenager is experiencing an urgent mental health difficulty, please contact your GP or NHS 111.
In an emergency or if there is an immediate risk to their safety, please go to your nearest Accident & Emergency (A&E) department or call 999.
My psychotherapy service does not provide emergency or crisis support.

My trajectory
Elaine Hames
I am Elaine Hames, a psychologist and psychotherapist with over 12 years of clinical experience, specializing in the care of children and adolescents.
Throughout my career, I have worked with children, adolescents, and their families, seeking to understand not only the difficulties they face, but also their individual histories, development, and needs.
My work is integrative, and each therapeutic process is built individually. Parents are also part of this process, with guidance and support sessions that help them better understand their children's needs and support them in their daily lives.

First contact
How does it work?
Seeking psychological support for a child can raise many questions. Therefore, the process begins with a conversation to understand what is happening, to learn about the child's or adolescent's needs, and to explain how support can help.
From there, each step is planned individually, respecting the age, history, and needs of each child and each family.
First step
Schedule a free contact

The first step is a brief, no-obligation 15-minute conversation for you to tell me what you've noticed and what motivated you to seek therapy.
It's also a time to ask questions, learn more about my work, and understand if the support I offer makes sense for your child's needs.

Second step
First session with the parents

For children, the first session is held with the parents or caregivers. During this meeting, we take time to talk about your child’s history, development, daily routine, family relationships, school life, and any difficulties or concerns you have noticed.
This helps me gain a better understanding of your child’s circumstances and what your family hopes to achieve through the therapeutic process.
